Geheime Ratstube: GTH Conference Vienna

Vienna by Morning

From 12 to 15 Februari 2014, the German Organization for Thrombosis and  Haemostasis Research (GTH) hosted a conference in Vienna, Austria. The reason for this non-german location was a joint conference with many sister organizations, including the Austrian.  I had earlier visited one in Nurnberg in 2010, which I enjoyed a lot. A few months ago, the Dutch Organization for Thrombosis and  Haemostasis Research (NVTH; sister to GTH) to the  sent around an email to encourage everyone in our field to send in research abstracts. So, me and Steven sent in one abstract each. Fortunately, we were selected to present our work in oral presentations in the ‘Geheime Ratstube’ (The Secret Councilroom). That’s a good thing because there were >300 abstracts submitted from which 55 were selected to be presented as talks, the rest as posters (260, I believe).

These were our titles:

• Mutations in Factor XII that cause angioedema enhance its susceptibility to activation by plasmin (Steven)
• Plasmin Cleavage of von Willebrand Factor as an Emergency Bypass for ADAMTS13 Deficiency in Thrombotic Microangiopathy (Me, on behalf of Claudia)

I felt that we had a good response from the audience at both talks. I hope they will read our work (and review the unpublished work favorably) after these talks! We met some Dutch colleagues from Maastricht and Leiden. Nice to see them there!

Practice makes perfect: going over the timing of the presentation…just…..once….more….

*Chairman fails to read title correctly* – Steven starts presentation with: “Nice try!”
